It keeps it fresh for me, and I think it keeps it fresh for the audience as well. I'm always trying new things, experimenting. Great music is great music at the end of the day, and that's what I just try to put forth. It's because people never know what to expect. I also think it's really important for you to reinvent yourself, and that's one of the reasons why I've been able to thrive for so long. I love playlists because they take me on a journey, and I don't know what's coming up next. The worst kind of albums to me are when they all sound like the same song. I'm just not really the one-dimensional type. I studied all kinds of music when I was a kid. What has inspired you to go in so many different directions?ĭerulo: I've always been that way. Listening to the songs you've released throughout the last year or so, you're touching on all different genres and styles. Maybe at the end of the year I'll figure out who I want to go with.

Right now, I'm just doing song deals, and then I'm going to go from there, but right now, I'm not feeling the full deal as of yet. McIntyre: So right now you're partnering with producers and musicians, and you're putting out these songs, and you're only signing deals with labels per song.ĭerulo: Yes. I've been on a label for 12 years, and towards the end, I felt like it was just time to go our separate ways, and what timing that is.
When it's time to go get a deal when we feel comfortable, we'll do that, but for now, it's just incredible to be able to have these pinnacles without being tied down. All of this is happening independently, and it's all a plan that my manager and I devised. The week after that, I have another one coming out with Atlantic. I have another EDM song coming out with Spinnin' Records. Columbia came knocking, and they wanted to do a deal for that song. It's unprecedented and unexpected, but I just released “Savage” out to the world just to kind of let it do what it would do on its own, and the plan worked. The power of that platform, the power that I have on that platform, is crazy. Doing a song independently and just throwing “Savage” out to the world was very calculated and utilizing the reach that I have on TikTok now. We're four regimes later, and you can't expect those people to understand me or my vision or my music, so my manager and I, Frank Harris, we devised a plan to get off the record label and do my own thing. I feel like there hve been so many regimes there and I was so far removed from the people who signed me. because it was not a relationship that we felt could help continue the story. Are these all just one-offs?ĭerulo: I was able to get off of my record label, Warner Bros., which I've been with for 12 years. McIntyre: Throughout the past year or so, you've put out quite a few singles that don't seem to be attached to any project. It was a lot of fun making that happen, and I'm glad that it happened the way that it did.
I just believe that they were so good that they needed a bigger stage. A beat is not going to go to the top of the chart, but with that being said, taking nothing away from how viral and how those sounds captured people's hearts. A beat is very different from the actual song. And I wouldn't say the songs existed on TikTok.
I have another song coming out on the that's just a regular Jason Derulo song, so it's not a strategy. Is finding new beats on TikTok a new strategy for you?ĭerulo: No. McIntyre: Both of these songs were out in the world and doing their thing on TikTok, and now that you've come and brought them to the next level. If clubs were actually out right now, I think it would be the premiere club track. It's something that I know people are going to flip out over, and they have been flipping out over, but I believe that it needed a real chance to have a main stage, so I wrote a complete song to it with the producers. McIntyre: I was just listening to “Coño.” Why don't you tell me a bit about that one?ĭerulo: Yeah, “Coño” is a similar thing, some similar idea where I heard it and I thought it was fantastic. “Savage” has this really happy, sunny vibe to it, and I think it was just exactly what people needed at the time. And I think besides everything else going on in the world, people just need that great feel. Was it surprising to see it blow up so quickly?ĭerulo: I think great music shines through no matter what's going on in the world, no matter what is going on in the news, a great song is important. McIntyre: Now, this song went from TikTok only to a massive hit in a matter of weeks, and that rarely happens.
